I am 49 years old and am going through the menopausal stage of my life for the past 6 years. All my life I have went from the "hot" comb to perms to wigs to braids. I just recently started going to the gym which I enjoy, but you know what that can do to a Sistah's hair. So I rencently just cut it ALL off and went natural. My husband doesn't really like it, but he's dealing with it. I finally feel free. I can shower, go to the gym, endure my hot flashes and even walk in the rain and not worry about my hair. I keep a little oil on it brush it and that's it. I am finally proud of my good hair that I was born with.

Someone said trimming your hair to make it grow is a myth because it grows from the opposite end. That's false. Trimming is required because it gets rid of split ends which can split all the way to the root and fall out. It's amazing how quickly the hair grows when we trim it. Wrapping the hair is also very necessary. It allows it to "rest" and not be rubbed out by rubbing against harsh fabric (your pillowcase pulls it right out). Use a satin or silk pillowcase or headwrap. If you rub your hand against your head continually it will come out so think of what you're doing to it just by sleeping when you toss or turn, kind of like brushing sandpaper against it. Wrapping also keeps it from being frizzed in the morning, it lays better and your don't have to manipulate it as much to style it.

Anything can be too much of a good thing, so protein treatments should NOT be overused or they will have the opposite effect of making your hair hard and dry. Some of the products contain petrolatum and other pore clogging ingredients. His advice is dead on,but I found carol's daughter products to be better since they're all natural. Thank you essence for not showing any weaves this time (all the pics, beautiful hair short and long). I'm glad he's an advocate of pressing. I'd like to know how to transition from a relaxer to pressing to not damage what I have. It seems to be the time of going natural (whether no chemicals or pressing instead of relaxers. I let go of the weave & now am ready to get rid of the relaxer. Natural can just be no chemicals. It's about time we got rid of the myth that Black hair doens't grow long. All it is is keeping the hair that grows out on our head instead of falling out by abusing it.

Hi Eugene, Great information. Do you know of any stylist in Louisiana that's close to Baton Rouge or New Orleans? I would like someone that's interested in healthy long hair. Thank you, and keep up the good work.
