Congrats Tyler, I think that the great Ms. Cicely Tyson said it as eloquently and graciously as possible. You are an inspiration to us all. I have followed your story and I too have started writing. May you continue to give God his glory and he will continue to bless you in your endeavors regardless of popular demand and ratings. Form your own mold!!!!! |

If Tyler Perry is part of divine plan for the salvation of African Americans, we should all evaluate our faith. We should be frightened that Tyler is being treated as a vehicle of God in these comments. |

Jenifer Lewis says that Tyler Perry's studio is the fulfillment of "Dr. King’s dream. This is Mandela’s dream. This is Sojourner’s dream. This is us telling our stories." Has Lewis read Truth's speeches? Truth would certainly not identify the representations of African American women in Perry's Madea franchise and its spin-offs as the fulfillment of any dream. Who is this our that Lewis and other African American celebrities invoke? Neither King nor Mandela would identify Perry as the fulfillment of some political agenda to gain greater political/economic agency for African American within and beyond the cultural machinery of the United States. Stop looking to Hollywood (black or white) hucksters to represent you. And no, I am not "hating." |

Maybe Mr. Perry will consider producing films that reflect the complexity and diversity of African Americans' experiences in the United States. Maybe Mr. Perry will stop producing films that use black women in the most sexist, and misogynist and stereotypical manner. Maybe Mr. Perry will consider resisting the black man, black woman, black family as a source of pathology and as the source of national crisis. And just maybe, Mr. Perry will create some films, plays, and televisions shows that aren't 21st century minstrel shows. Maybe Mr. Perry will stop bamboozling African Americans. Put differently, I wish I could identify some substance beneath all of the hype. |

Mr. Perry, my son Stewart is in his third year in college and $40,000 in debt already in student loans. He already has received his associate's degree in graphic design while holding down two jobs as a substitute teacher and as a security guard at retirement homes on the weekends. He is now working on his degree in kinetic imaging at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. He is interested in interning in the summer of '09 if available. I know you're wondering why I am writing instead of him. He is also right now trying to pledge as a member of a fraternity and right now is holding on by his fingernails. he has lost 22 pounds since the semester started in August. I am imploring you on his behalf for an opportunity if there is a spot for him. Glory be to God Debora |
