New York’s Daily News reported yesterday that when the First Lady visited Paris with Malia and Sasha last month, they were given special access to shop in an upscale boutique when the store would normally be closed. French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Tuesday that calls were made to open the upscale children’s boutique, Bonpoint, usually closed by law on Sundays. Apparently the Obama ladies arrived in a small group and stayed for about an hour, after the U.S. Embassy arranged for the opening of the shop.
Sarkozy responded to questions about the preferential treatment with this: “Who is going to explain to them why France is the only country where shops are closed on Sundays?”
