As a child growing up in the South in 1957, one who felt and saw the inequality of racism by the extreme differences in life quality in the segregated black and white sections of Lenoir, North Carolina, and as an aspiring dance student, one who was told by white teachers that "Black folk can't do ballet", seeing Michael Jackson and The Jackson Five perform gave me such an extreme amount of pride. During Michael's career, I observed how he transcended race, color and cultural divides and connected folk with his music and his presence. Because of his artistry, I was inspired to delve beyond the confines and perimeters of my small southern town and venture out into the world. Thank you Michael, for touching my life, for inspiring me to never lose sight of the queen that I am, and for the initiative to keep shaking a leg, even now at the age of 52. May others be inspired by your legacy as I have been. Godspeed and God bless your family!
