First Lady Michelle Obama & Mom Cover ESSENCE
Leading Ladies
ESSENCE magazine was granted exclusive access into the White House for its May 2009 issue, which features First Lady Michelle Obama and her mother, Mrs. Marian Robinson, on the cover. Before you pick up this must-have special edition issue, view behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot. Plus, check out a sneak peek of ESSENCE Editor-in-Chief Angela Burt-Murray’s interview with the nation’s most famous mother-and-daughter duo.

I am one who glad to see the President and First Lady are ones not to hide in the White House! Some people are complaining simply because they do not like the Obama’s.... Get over it; you are going to be seeing much more of this new age government marketing over the next 7 3/4 years....lol!

They gave a great hairstyle and makeup to Mrs. Robinson. All who are protesting go have a makeover!!! Do YOU look dated???

This will be a great issue. I tend to view publications online, but I 'll make an exception and purchase this issue for posterity's sake. I don't ever recall in my lifetime a First Lady sharing space (privately or publicly ) with ther elders. Jackie Kennedy sure didn't do it.

What is going on with our nation, never in my life at my age have i seen any president, his wife his mother inlaw do all these interviews. We the Amercian people are paying them out of our tax dollars to do a job, and to me paying for fuel to be on Jay Leno, paying our administration to do all these interviews on our tax dollars during his hours they should be thinking about the mess our economy is in, I am sad to have voted for this. I am sad at the Pride i see, not the words he said on rick Warren to remain humble, cover of magazines, jay leno is not humble. Tell me, any mother would be proud of a son or son in law who achieves a goal. why did you not interview any other first lady, or mother in law.

I love the cover. They look so beautiful. It's wonderful.

Why do some people always focus on the negative? The picture is beautiful airbrushed or not. A lot of women of color appear lighter in photos, the big deal????? It's not one. And as far as Michelle's fashion sense, she nails it. And even if she does not meet everyone's expectations, she's still a BEAUTIFUL WOMAN. It's funny how superstars and singers can get so much press on their outfits, which are revealing their bodies most times, but when our first lady wears something "not so fashionable" she gets ripped for it. Let's not make this about something as simple as clothes and make up. She gets enough of that from "other" critics.

oh, what a wonderful article. The relationship between two strong black women who just happen to be mother and daughter is phenomenal. I am so glad to see this relationship brought to life in such a positive way...not like the ones shown on Jerry Springer and other out-rageous shows. My daughter and I have the same special relationship as Mrs Robinson and her daughter, Michelle. When I bacame widowed, my daughter insisted I come live with she and her family. Not because she thought I could not take care of myself, but simply because I was alone and she wanted to make my life easier. We have a great living arrangement and I provide guidance, wisdom and sometimes old fashioned discipline to my young grand-daughter there, along with assistance to the house-hold when it is needed. We all have our roles in the family and are respectful of each others boundaries. We are truly blessed to like each other as well as love each other.
