First Lady Michelle Obama & Mom Cover ESSENCE
Leading Ladies
ESSENCE magazine was granted exclusive access into the White House for its May 2009 issue, which features First Lady Michelle Obama and her mother, Mrs. Marian Robinson, on the cover. Before you pick up this must-have special edition issue, view behind-the-scenes photos from the shoot. Plus, check out a sneak peek of ESSENCE Editor-in-Chief Angela Burt-Murray’s interview with the nation’s most famous mother-and-daughter duo.

I received my new Essence with First Lady Michelle Obama and her mother on the cover. Great job by the magazine, however, I must agree with some of the comments regarding the makeup on both ladies. Really too much and not natural looking at all! I would also like to comment on the style and choice of fashions that Mrs. Obama has been wearing lately. While some outfits are flattering to her figure, others are not. Perhaps she needs to get ideas from a fashion consultant or stylist in helping her to select her clothes. In particular are the sweaters that she likes to adorn. They make her stomach look too full and puffy when they are buttoned at the center, and she should leave those cardigans for college students! PLEASE! We want her to look most fashionable and stylish in everything she wears!

Essence, I am a proud subscriber of your magazine. This was such a great issue. I love Mrs. Obama, for her answers about them being the ideal family for the black community. She stated that they are just one example their are so many families and different blended families. I am proud that she takes every opportunity to set the record start about African American culture. Yes there is a large number of peope being raised without fathers, and men need to step up. But there are also families that have a mother, father, and grandmother in the family. Thank You Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Robinson. I am a mother of two daughters who have dreams of being a pediatrician and a veterinarian. I pray that they reach there goals. May God continue to Bless The Obamas. Again Thank You for all that you are doing and going to do to promote change and Thank You for educating others about the African American community.

Michelle you look lovely. I like your bright colours and more so the different look you have at times. Your mom also looks nice. Their will be one and two criticism as I see, about different things eg someone mentioned your clothes. So what, you could have worn something she loved and then someone else say they didn't. I know you would like to please us all but the learnt person in you will tell you, you can't and you have to and be comfortable with you. We know you are. Mom, you look great. All I see is lipstick you didnt over do it with the eyes etc. Two wonderful beautiful women. Yes as you said Michelle we can be all we want to with hard work. Thank you.

Everyone is proud of the Obamas. This is a story of a proud family who showed themselves and the world that one can be anyhing he wants to be with hard work and determination. I am not even just talking about their late position but the fact that they have worked so hard to be so academically successful, shows us that with hard work and the support we each can go to great heights which is the Lord's wish for all His children. Her mom is part of that process, becaue she supported and did her part. Congrats to both of you.

This is so funny! I have been up to this point not AT ALL GETTING any of the fuss over michelle's looks, hair, or clothes. This cover is the first one to make me think she is worthy of all the praise. Apparently, all of you who thought she looked good in unflattering clothes--- bare make up-- bad lighting on other photo shoots-- and half done hair--- are apparently the ones who have no style and only liked her because she looked as frumpy as you! NOW SHE LOOKS GOOD! And MOMMA TOO! (sigh) and you are all complaining. No wonder....

I have been a subscriber, fan ,and reader of Essence for years. I go back to the beginning of the magazine when nobody heard of Susan Taylor. I have never written a note the magazine. However, the May Issue(2009) is the most beautiful cover that the magazine has produced. There have been great covers.. What a lovely tribute to the Obama-Robinson families! What a source of pride for the black community and for America! This is truly a new day. Dorothy Dodson Butler, PA

I agree..love the pictures..but why and who is putting those huge belts on Michelle?!? That is a fashion blunder! It does not flatter her at all. A thin belt at least..if she really ahs to have one! You really have to have that long slinky waste to pull that off!

The pictures were an Essence exclusive because no other magazine wants to publish the first Lady and her mum

Whoever is responsible for the wide black belt *over* the cardigan should be arrested. Whoa.

It is so great to see a mother and daughter relationship that show love and kindness. This relationship, I wish I shared with my daughter. You see love in each of them for each other and this is what a mother wants in a relationship with their daughter. She is a great first lady and I am glad she appreciate her mother in all she do, I am proud of Michelle. I am more proud of the way she care and love her mother, I wish it was me.
