Flashback Friday: Billie Holiday
Today, July 16, marks the passing of the incomparable singer Ms. Billie Holiday. Few vocalists before or since have been able to spin such emotional depth through such a lovely voice. This Flashback Friday, we honor the Jazz great, adoring everything from her flawless eyebrows to the trademark flower in her hair. We might even brush up on her history since there are rumors of a Billie biopic starring Mary J. Blige floating around. Let's prepare shall we?
While Billie had her music under control, that wasn’t always so with her personal life. She married trombonist Jimmy Monroe in 1941, but crept around with trumpeter Joe Guy, who also served as her drug dealer. In the Diana Ross-led film “Lady Sings The Blues,” Guy was the inspiration for the character famously called “Piano Man.”
