ESSENCE Beauty Editor's Ambush Makeover
Looking for a Harlem Beauty
Beauty Editor Pamela Edwards Christiani hits the streets to transform a real woman, beautifully, on the spot.
It’s a Sunday afternoon in Harlem. Church is in session but the salons are still open. We’re on the hunt to find a lady that will let us shift her look in no time flat.

I'm almost 60 and really get depressed when I shop, would like to see some fashions that dosent look hootchie or looks like something my daugther likes to wear . Come on down to South Carolina would love a makeover..

Jizzle..I understand your point but if you are a black woman..or black, period, speak only of yourself when it comes to black women being "*ucked up " in the head..remember that if you are black..your grandmothers and mother are also. There is not a damn thing wrong or *ucked up about wanting to change your hair. Hell, WE ain't paying their bills so who cares!!!

This is bull sh**! All they did was add fake ass hair and eyelashes to the woman, what example does that give for the real world? Can the average woman afford the time or money it takes for fusions? Yall need to show som realisitic sh** on here with some natural hair too. Yall are some of the main reasons why black women are so f**ked up in the head when it comes to image!!!

Mary L..I am ex-NAVY..I was an MA (you know what that is LOL) and when I was on active duty (1989-1992) black women were given a hard time about our hair..wearing hats all the time and PT all day..we were not even allowed to wear braids but the white women were wearing them!!! Now in 2009, I'm curious to know how the military has changed when it comes to our hair..please let me know!! Thanks in advance. God Bless!!

Hi I am in US Navy, My comment is in reguard to hair. As a female in the military I take pride in my hair, body, and spiritual side of life. Whenever I can, I take the liberty to read the articles, and try to stay up on the latest news. My hair is of great value when I get the chance to let it down from a bun. I do know its not good to pull it back tight, but sometimes I'm just dont know what else to do! Do you have any suggestions for us millitary chicks! I am proud to state I have been a natural for four years, great length.. I was born and raised in the Bronx,NY! Also we where black socks and boots all the time! We need some help.. Or should I say I Do! I would like to thank you in advance for your advice!! QuaterMaster third Classmen Mary lamot of the United States Navy and proud to serve my country.
